"Into the Wild" - Chris McCandless' siblings speak out about family violence [TW: Physical abuse]
This is a sad postscript to what is, by turns, a fascinating, mysterious and heartbreaking story. Chris McCandless disappeared into the Alaskan bush on a solitary expedition 22 years ago. His adventures and demise were recounted in Jon Krakauer's book "Into the Wild," and later a film of the same name. Now, his sisters are speaking out about why he left home. Family violence is a large part of what drove me to move ceaselessly over the past 20 years, in search of my true self and some inner pea...

Travels With Charley by John Steinbeck is the best memoir I've ever read.
Travels with Charley is a 1960 travelogue written by John Steinbeck. Its based on his own experiences as he drove across the U.S. in his camper-wielding truck named after Don Quixotes horse Rocinante, along with his travel companion, a French poodle named Charley. Claiming to be "In Search of America," he makes a rather distant trek from his home in New York, to the California Peninsula, across the Southwest and back. I consider myself a traveler, and I enjoy the occasional travleouge. Books...

This is what happens when you stare out of the window, into the dark.
In the 90s, when the internet was still a myth in my part of the world, I’d spend summer nights propped up against my window, either reading or staring blankly into space. There’s something that I always loved about that city, the rectangles of light in the darkness reminding me that a million other people lived their lives in the same space as me, but in completely different worlds. One window, with translucent white curtains, showed me a father and his son. A pattern of neon stars could be g...

Describe yourself with 5 books or less. Can you?
I believe you can summon up most of my personality by these books: On The Road (Kerouac), Fight Club (Palahniuk), Brave New World (Huxley), 1984 (Orwell) Into The Wild (Krakauer) Those are the ones that have affected me the most since I've started reading.

DampD deserve so much credit this season
I'm just very impressed with how they've handled the colossus that is A Storm of Swords. I mean imagine taking such a dense, complex, and balls out wild(at times) book and turning it into a show for BOTH fans of the books and the more casual show only viewers, while still making it your own despite being in the shadow of GRRM. And they're actually pulling it off. I mean you could whine about the omission of some characters(where is Lem, and why can't I have Lem?), or changes in the story, but on...
Books to read in the woods!
Hey guys, I am moving to Yosemite National Park for the summer and was wondering what books would be good to read while living in the woods. I have already read "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau and I am starting the book "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer. Thanks for any suggestions. The book does not have to be directly related to nature, I enjoy philosophy, history, and anything else! Thanks!
Reading "Wild", more books like this one?
I'm just about to finish Cheryl Strayed's "Wild", and I'm loving it so far. It's the first book by a chick I've ever read and that makes me excited! I love her writing. More importantly, I love the idea of hiking the PCT. I'm an outdoorsman or whatever, a fan of "Into the Wild" and such books, "The Road" by London and well, I have a tattoo of *Home I'll Never Be* by Kerouac. I'd like to read, though, more books that deal with living in the wilderness, "Walden" style. Strayed talks about reading ...

Decent Urban Survival Movies
Hey, I was wondering if anybody knew of any decent urban survival movies. I'm not talking about 'into the wild', 'book of eli', or anything like that. I'm also not really talking about 'Doomsday Preppers' because I think the show is garbage. I'm talking about realistic videos and movies that teach you how to survive in an urban environment.

I'm 18 years old and live in Ohio. I just started college this semester, and I'm going for Psychology and I'm really interested in mental illness. My favorite movie is Donnie Darko (I actually have a tattoo for it on my thigh), favorite book is Into The Wild. I love nature and helping people and peace. I love exploring all things that are "unknown" or "abnormal" like anything mystical, magic, psychedelics, aliens, etc. I'm not any specific religion, but Buddhism is what I'm following right now...
